Summer Localhost 2014
Date: 20 August 2014
About the Event
It’s hot out there…dang hot…but not as hot as the line up for the this month’s Port80 Summer Localhost coming up on the evening of the 20th of Aug here in Newport.
For those of you who don’t know, our Localhosts are (normally) free, evening events with a couple of web/tech related talks.
The 2014 Summer Localhost is on the evening of Wednesday the 20th of Aug and will be in Newport, South Wales. Event will be from around 19:00 and will be at a new venue (for those of you who’ve been to previous Localhosts). The new location is the Newport BID office.
Update: The BID office is 147 Commercial Street which, if you’re parking at Kingsway, you’ll be right next to it; if you’re coming in by train, it’s about a 5 min walk. Here’s a Google Map and below is the shop front you’re looking for:
Look Who’s Talking
We have some cracking speakers lined up (see below for more info):
- Steve Morgan
- Craig Lockwood (“Be more like Howie“)
- Frank West (“Building for emotion“)
- Cerian Jones (‘IP for web designers‘)
So, if you’re up for an evening of insightful web related(ish) talks and perhaps an ale or two later in Ye Olde Murenger, please grab a ticket before they vanish.
Frank West (@frankjwest)
Talk: Building for emotion
A journey through the web looking at how our work influences millions of lives and how our next line of code might change a life.
Frank West has worked in Front End Development and UX for the past 15 years and recently took the jump into running his startup, britehire. He loves all aspects of the web and only takes a break from learning when his cat wants feeding.
Steve Morgan (@steviephil)
Talk: The Rise & (Supposed) Fall Of Google Authorship
At the end of June, Google announced that they were removing authorship photos from their search results – a shock within the SEO industry, the majority of whom thought that it was a positive step towards rewarding authoritative writers and bloggers. I’ll be talking about Google’s Authorship journey so far (a.k.a. rel=”author”), what the changes mean and a prediction on Google’s future plans… Is Authorship truly dead, or are the reports of its death greatly exaggerated…?
Steve Morgan is a freelance SEO consultant from and based in Cardiff, trading as Morgan Online Marketing. He also blogs about SEO, social media and online marketing in general over at SEOno. On a more personal level, he's a massive rock music fan, especially stuff from the 70s and 90s.
Craig Lockwood (@Craiginwales)
Talk: Be more like Howie
As ‘creatives’ we all feel a sense of panic when launching new products. We fear the raised eyebrow of a colleague or peer, for some, the pressure of launch can be crippling. This isn’t unique to our industry, but we can take pointers from other industries so that we can launch with confidence.
