Spring Localhost 2014
Date: 26 February 2014
About the Event
Well, Christmas is done and dusted so let’s pull the veil off our first event of the year*: the Port80 Spring Localhost (as far as I’m concerned Feb is spring, hey! I’m an optimist!).
In case you don’t know, Localhost events are the evening dos we put on every quarter here in Newport. We tend to mosey over to Ye Olde Murenger pub after a Localhost for a pint (or two) & a chinwag**
The event is free (the Uni have kindly given me the room free of charge given the security debacle last time!).
The date is coming fast: Wednesday the 26th of Feb (18:30 to 20:30)
See below for the three cracking speakers: Stu Robson, Gareth Strange & Ruth John.
I’ll be updating this page with all the speakers/talks details as soon as I have that info.
As usual, don’t forget to follow the cherub on Twitter for more updates.
See you there!
(** the Port80 cherub is off the falling down water for the year so a pub will be quite painful for me!)
Stu Robson (sturobson)
Talk: Freelancing: A Survivors Tale (year 1)
An egotistical look back on my first year of freelancing. The highs, the lows, answering client emails on a campsite, making things, breaking things and how I’ve coped.
Stu Robson is a front-end developer from the deepest parts of Wiltshire, having been a night-owl freelancer for two years he took the jump into working full-time in January 2013. If he’s not coding he’s tweeting. If he’s not tweeting he’s usually spending time with his partner, Sarah and son, Ethan.
Ruth John (rumyra)
Talk: Web Components
If there’s one thing you’re going to want to learn more about this year it’s Web Components. Ruth introduces them with a journey through Templates, Custom Elements and the elusive Shadow Dom. You’ll walk away feeling enlightened and eager to get started building some.
Ruth John wireframes, designs and codes for The Lab at O2 (Telefonica). She also tweets and blogs a bit too. You can often find her chatting about web development, building apps and how an extra div is not the answer to your styling problems. Either that or the lesser known Thundercats characters.
Gareth Strange (garethstrange)
Talk: Make time for personal projects
Developing your techniques and learning new skills is something everyone wants, but finding the time can be tricky. I want to talk about making time for those ideas in your head, no matter how crazy they are. You, your employer and your clients could potentially see the benefits, or if you’re really lucky, you could end up with a weird drawing of a man with a beard.
By day, Gareth works for a Cardiff Bay based agency, that goes by the name of Bluegg. By night, he likes drawing and making things, whilst listening to Bob Dylan and drinking good whiskey.
